Armidale, population 21 350, is a university city in the heart of the New England region, 569 kilometres, 353.6 miles north of Sydney, just over 100 kilometres, 62.1 miles inland from Coffs Harbour and 110 kilometres, 68.4 miles north of Tamworth in Nganyaywana country. In the autumn months of March to May, the pretty parks with their church spires become layered with red and gold cruchy leaves.
The Aboriginal Centre and Keeping Place, run by the local people, is an educational, visual and performing arts centre housed in a modern building with a distinct ochre-coloured tin roof.
The aim of the centre is to foster the renewal and continuity of Aboriginal culture. There are permanent displays of artefacts and interpretive material as well as various special exhibitions, crafts and Aboriginal-design clothing.
