Charter Flights to Orbost/Marlo, VIC
Blink and you’ll miss it, Marlo on the South Victorian coast is a town full of surprises, great food and a view that’s hard to beat. We found ourselves in this sleepy little coastal hideaway, while on a charter to Orbost in the Beechcraft King Air.
Directly on track between Sydney and King Island, we fly overhead Orbost regularly on our luxury golf weekends to King Island’s Cape Wickham golf course. A short airstrip served only by private air charter, Orbost (YORB) Airport is actually the Marlo Airport, just a few kilometers from Marlo on the very southern tip of Victoria.
Things to do in Marlo / Orbost
Go fishing on the Snowy River
As the Snowy River winds down from the Australian Alps, life thrives in the river network which reaches the ocean at Marlo. Bream are the pick, and in town you’ll hear legends of the countries biggest Bream (the size of Barra!) caught just off the boat ramp, or further upstream North of Orbost.
Run or walk the coastal track
As the Snowy river breaks the coast, flowing out into Bass Strait – a beach stretching for 90 miles begins to the East. Bonus points for those who guess the name of this ’90 mile beach’ and you wouldn’t want to walk the whole stretch, but the first few kilometers from Marlo wraps around the river bank before climbing up to a scenic lookout over Bass Strait. Don’t miss the beanie poles near the boat ramp too… You’ll understand when you see them!
Spend an afternoon at the Marlo Hotel.
Build on the hill, with uninterrupted views over Bass Strait from the enormous back deck, the Marlo Hotel is one of the best locations we’ve ever seen for an afternoon pint. Sunset to the west, ocean in front and 90 Mile beach to the East, it’s an absolute stunner. With great food and music too!
Places to Stay in Marlo/Orbost
Accommodation options are very limited in Orbost, so save the extra drive and stay in Marlo. There’s several luxury retreats, a caravan park, and our favorite the Tabbara Lodge.
We were blown away with owners Tanya and Chris, who offer a free pickup from the airport and 4 self contained units among the trees. With two units set up for families and the other two for couples, each has a modern bathroom, great view over the paddocks out the back and a shared BBQ area second only to the Marlo Hotel. Their two, well trained and gentle natured dogs deserve special mention, and pricing was very reasonable for the five star service and exceptional facilities.
Where the locals eat.
Aside from the Marlo Hotel, there’s a great café co-located with the local fishing store up the hill. Serving great coffee and Melbourne-style breakfast options, don’t be fooled by the faded hand-painted signage on the wall. This place isn’t as run-down as it looks from the outside!
Getting to Orbost/Marlo
